Module 1 - Chapter 2

Letter Sounds & Phonics

Welcome to the magical world of sounds! In this chapter, you'll learn how each letter makes its own special sound. Vowel sounds (short/long), consonant sounds, blending, rhyming, and 50 CVC words to build your reading skills.

🎵 What Are Letter Sounds?

Every letter has a sound - like a musical note! When we put these sounds together, we make WORDS!

🎸 Think of it like music:

Just like musical notes (Do, Re, Mi) come together to make a song, letter sounds come together to make words!

  • Letters = Musical notes 🎵
  • Sounds = The notes playing 🎶
  • Words = The beautiful song 🎼

📚 What is Phonics?

Phonics is the way we learn the sounds that letters make. It helps us:

  • Read new words we've never seen before
  • Spell words correctly
  • Understand how words are built

🌟 Vowel Sounds: The Heart of Every Word

Remember our 5 vowels? A, E, I, O, U - They're SUPER special because each one can make TWO different sounds:

Short Vowel Sound (Quick and Fast! ⚡)

Like a quick tap on a drum

Long Vowel Sound (Says its own name! 🗣️)

Like holding a note in a song

⚡ Short Vowel Sounds

Short vowels are quick and snappy! Let's learn each one:

A
/æ/
as in cat
E
/ɛ/
as in bed
I
/ɪ/
as in pig
O
/ɒ/
as in hot
U
/ʌ/
as in sun

🧠 Memory Sentence:

"Ants Eat Inside Orange Umbrellas"

Say: /æ/ /ɛ/ /ɪ/ /ɒ/ /ʌ/

🗣️ Long Vowel Sounds

Long vowels say their own names! They sound like when you're calling out the letter:

A
/eɪ/
as in cake
E
/iː/
as in bee
I
/aɪ/
as in bike
O
/oʊ/
as in rope
U
/juː/
as in cute

🔍 When do vowels say their name?

Magic E Rule: When a word ends with 'e', the vowel before it usually says its name!

  • cap → cape (short 'a' becomes long 'a')
  • kit → kite (short 'i' becomes long 'i')
  • hop → hope (short 'o' becomes long 'o')

🎯 Consonant Sounds

Consonants are easier - most of them make just ONE sound! Let's explore the most important ones:

B
/b/
as in ball
C
/k/
as in cat
D
/d/
as in dog
F
/f/
as in fish
G
/g/
as in go
H
/h/
as in hat
J
/dʒ/
as in jump
K
/k/
as in kite
L
/l/
as in lamp
M
/m/
as in mom
N
/n/
as in no
P
/p/
as in pen
R
/r/
as in run
S
/s/
as in sun
T
/t/
as in top
V
/v/
as in van
W
/w/
as in wet
Z
/z/
as in zoo

🔗 Blending Sounds Together

Now for the magic! When we put sounds together, they make WORDS! This is called blending.

🧩 Blending is like building with blocks:

Each sound is a block. When you stack them together, you build a word!

The word: CAT

C A T

/k/ + /æ/ + /t/ = CAT!

The word: DOG

D O G

/d/ + /ɒ/ + /g/ = DOG!

The word: SUN

S U N

/s/ + /ʌ/ + /n/ = SUN!

The word: PIG

P I G

/p/ + /ɪ/ + /g/ = PIG!

Try This with AI

Practice what you learned by talking to an AI assistant (like ChatGPT or Claude). Type these into the chat:

  1. "What sound does the letter A make? Give me 5 words that start with that sound"
  2. "Help me practice rhyming words — give me 10 pairs of words that rhyme"
  3. "What are CVC words? Give me 10 examples and explain them"

The same skills that help you communicate clearly with AI will help you communicate clearly with people. Practice both!
